Common questions
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Signs include old ceramic fuses, no RCD safety switches, a board with no room for new circuits, scorch marks or a burning smell, or power that trips often. If your home is more than 30 or 40 years old and the board has never been changed, it's worth a check.
What is an RCD and do I need one?
An RCD (residual current device) is a safety switch that cuts the power in a split second if it detects current leaking to earth, for example through a person. Many older homes don't have them. Adding RCD protection, usually as part of a switchboard upgrade, is one of the best safety improvements you can make.
Do I need a new switchboard to add a heat pump or more circuits?
Sometimes. Older boards may not have the space or capacity for new circuits. We'll check yours and tell you honestly whether it needs upgrading or can take the extra load as it is.
Will the power be off during the upgrade?
Yes, for part of the day. We'll tell you up front roughly how long, so you can plan around it, and get you back on as quickly as we can.
Will I get a certificate for the work?
Yes. The work is tested and signed off, and you get a Certificate of Compliance for your records.
